I’d gone thirty years of life and twelve years of the craft without being arrested; I’d been a P.I. for under a week and here I found myself sitting on a bench in a holding cell that reeked of piss. It was something indeed that nearly getting killed by a demon turned out to be only the second worst thing that happened that day. They’d taken the shoelaces from my boots and the drawstring from my hoodie, my pockets had been emptied (apart from my hoodie pocket which no one but another practitioner could have reached the bottom of) and I’d been told that someone would see me as soon as possible. That had been roughly two hours ago, and I was mentally beginning to decorate my new home.

Douglas Baxter. This had him all over, the sneering wealthy prick. Rachel had seemed more than willing to let me keep my investigation going, but I’ll never forget that filthy look he’d drenched me in; he must have called the police first thing this morning. A part of me was beginning to sympathise with the mystery mage cursing people, a part of me I tried to shake free from my head; drift too far down that road and suddenly you’re boiling frogs and newts and making vague prophecies about murderous kings.

As the hustle and bustle died down in the hallway outside my cell, I knew that I had no hope of getting out of there that night. This was more than just me being detained and questioned; I was being worn down. So, Douglas had friends in the police? Of course he did. He’s a lawyer, I bet he and whoever is in charge of the Glasgow force drink at the same gentleman’s club. Did Glasgow have any gentleman’s clubs?

I tried to sleep, but all there was in the way of a bed was a hard bench and the cell had no heating as far as I could tell. So instead I did my best to meditate and remove myself from the situation, feeling the sand drain past me until finally there was a shuffling outside and the hatch slid open on my door.

“Rudy?” said a man’s voice.

“Who the hell else—” I paused and remembered how the Clockwork Man had punished me for being too angry. “I mean, yeah. What time is it?”

“A little before eight in the morning.”

“Can I get out of here yet? Is anyone ready to hear what I have to say?”

“Not yet. Look, I’m not here officially,” the voice stage whispered. “I’m here to let you know I’ve called Laura. She’s raging and told me she’s going to talk to her parents.”

“You’re him, right?” I asked. “You’re the one who told her the police haven’t found dick all.”

“Keep your voice down!” my visitor hissed. “You might be right but it’s still confidential and if anyone finds out what I’ve done I’m pretty sure the best outcome would be me being fired.”

I stood and crossed the short distance to the door.
